Simona Halep Touched by Emotions as She was Instrumental in Emma Raducanu’s Maiden Grand Slam at US Open 2021

The recently concluded women’s singles final of the US Open 2021 witnessed history. In a young final, Britain’s Emma Raducanu beat Canadian sensation Leylah Fernandez. The lesser known fact is that Raducanu has a rich cultural history. After the final, she broke the internet courtesy her phenomenal game. Judy Murray, mother of Grand Slam champion Andy Murray, recently released a throwback photo of the women’s champion with another Slam winner in Simona Halep.

Raducanu’s unique cultural background

Coming right through the qualifiers, Raducanu became the first woman to win the US Open from the qualifiers, and that too without dropping a set. She won ten straight matches in two sets. At the young age of 18, the British prodigy has already got the world talking about her. It was a flawless performance from her in the final, against another player with a wonderful descent in Fernandez.

Emma Raducanu was in fact born in Toronto, Canada in 2002. Her father originates from the country of Romania, and her mother is of Chinese descent. The young star then acquired British citizenship, and represents the country as well. She has attributed her game to the great Li Na and Simona Halep, players from her parents’ origins respectively. Thus, Raducanu has a rich cultural heritage that goes way back.

Judy Murray rolls back the years with image of Emma Raducanu and Simona Halep

After the historic final, the internet united to congratulate the young champion. This included Judy Murray, who has supported women’s tennis in numerous ways over the years. Taking to social media, the 62-year-old tweeted an old image of Raducanu with her idol Halep. She wrote, “We should never underestimate the importance of female role models in sport and creating opportunities for young athletes to get close to them. Emma Raducanu’ dad is Romanian and here she is with Simona Halep.”

Growing up, Raducanu has been a huge fan of Halep on and off the court. The image was an adorable, yet inspiring throwback. 2-time Grand Slam winner Halep even replied to the post, with a heart icon. Though the Romanian ex-No.1 has been struggling to return to the best of form off-late, she has surely played a huge role in another star’s success.
