Renowned tennis coach Darren Cahill has provided insight into Simona Halep’s turbulent journey throughout the drug incident that enveloped her career. Cahill has helped elite players like Halep rise to the top and is presently coaching prodigy Jannik Sinner. As a former coach to Halep, Cahill shared insights into the mental upheaval she went through while the doping saga was ongoing.

Cahill, who had previously led Halep to win two major titles in her career, ended their six-year working relationship in 2021. But his support for Halep never stopped. Former Wimbledon and French Open champion Simone Halep, 32, was suspended in October 2022 after testing positive for an illegal drug called Roxadustat during the US Open. Later that year, she was also accused of some irregularities found in her athlete’s biological passport (ABP), leading to a ban for four years. However, her appeal to the court resulted in a reduction of the ban to nine months. Cahill was Halep’s pillar of strength during the entire affair, providing constant assurance and standing by her appeal for innocence.

“To me, it’s been 18 months of torture for her. I’ve always believed in her. I’ve always believed she would never deliberately or knowingly take anything that was wrong or banned,” Cahill said, expressing his faith in Halep.
