In the US, maternal complications afflicting black mothers have become a major problem in recent years. Tori Bowie, a renowned US Olympic athlete, lost her life due to complications from childbirth and it has forced numerous celebrities to speak out.

The difficulties that led to her death were similar to those that the tennis legend encountered while giving birth to her daughter, Olympia. And now, after being quiet for a while, the 23-time Grand Slam champion has finally reacted to the sad news.

Serena Williams reacts to Tori Bowie’s death

After being forced to relive the trauma, the 41-year-old American legend, who knows how maternal complications can be a life-threatening situation, as she recently reacted to Bowie’s demise. A lot of athletes from the tennis world and from other sporting arenas have come forward to extend their support to people of color facing maternal complications.

A few days ago, Allyson Felix, the 37-year-old Olympian who won medals in the 2016 Olympics for the US with Tori Bowie, shared an emotional post regarding how black athletes are facing problems during childbirth. Just like Bowie, the retired athlete also faced complications during childbirth but was fortunate to get through unscathed. In addition, that post talked about how four Olympians who won in the 2016 Olympics faced similar complications.

Moreover, she also stated how her fellow track and field athlete’s death won’t go in vain. The ‘Queen of the Court’ also shared Felix’s tribute to Bowie on her Instagram account, showing her support for the maternal health crisis black women are facing in the US. Along with the 23-time Grand Slam champion, other tennis stars also came in support of Felix’s stand.

Other tennis stars who came forward after Bowie’s death 

Tennis stars Naomi Osaka, Coco Gauff, and Sloane Stephens, in addition to the 41-year-old tennis icon, responded to Felix’s tribute to the late Tori Bowie. While Stephens shared Felix’s tribute on her Instagram story with the heart emoji, the other two liked the retired American track and field athlete’s tribute.

Moreover, Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, stepped forward to support the cause and suggested on Twitter that the US may be experiencing a black maternal health crisis.
