Russia’s young tennis prodigy, Mirra Andreeva is truly following in the footsteps of tennis goddess, Maria Sharapova. This sixteen-year-old Russian tennis prodigy won the WTA Newcomer of the Year. Not to mention, the 2023 season has been truly remarkable for Andreeva since she won her WTA tour match against Leylah Fernandez. In fact, Andreeva’s performance was remarkable in Wimbledon and Frenc Open 2023. Now following her WTA title this year, Andreeva is surely making fans nostalgic by bringing references to Sharapova and Navratilova.
Almost twenty years after Sharapova won the title of WTA Player of the Year, Andreeva was awarded a similar recognition. This surely brings a new motivation for Russia to see the next world’s number one in the making.

Before Mirra Andreeva, four other Russian tennis stars were awarded this recognition. The first one was Anna Kournikova, who received the title in 1996. Six years after that, another Russian tennis star, Svetlana Kuznetsova was awarded the recognition from WTA in 2002. This time Russia truly showed unbeatable feat in Women’s Tennis.
