The image of New York City in the mainstream is one of business, glitz, and glamor. However, underneath the superficial and glossy mainstream representation lies an uncomfortable truth. Of course, there’s no denying the fact that it is one of the world’s most prosperous cities. Despite that reality, it’s also a city with an abject level of poverty across its five boroughs. The low-income families living across these boroughs face challenges day in and day out in terms of making ends meet. Thankfully, the non-profit organization Robin Hood is making a big difference. The non-profit is led by none other than Serena Williams‘ husband Alexis Ohanian.

Recently, the non-profit organized a fundraising event and raised an amount worth several million. Unsurprisingly, board member Alexis Ohanian was incredibly proud, and to express it, he wrote a heartfelt post on Twitter.

The May 15 event organized by Robin Hood had around 4,000 residents of New York City in attendance. Robin Hood organized it to mark 35 years of their fight against poverty. The 4,000 residents combined to raise a whopping $61.4 million.

Following the event, the official Robin Hood Twitter page tweeted, “Last night, 4,000 NYers attended the #RobinHoodBenefit to mark 35 years of fighting poverty in NY – raising $61.4 million”. The tweet also revealed that over the last 30 years, the organization managed to raise almost $3 billion in funds to help families in need.

A proud Alexis Ohanian retweeted the post and wrote, “Another amazing night from an amazing non-profit I’m grateful to serve!” Ohanian went on to write, “Thanks to all of you who attended & donated to help the most vulnerable New Yorkers. LFG!”

Robin Hood isn’t the only social welfare organization that Alexis Ohanian is involved with. The tech entrepreneur and investor, has also backed a variety of projects aimed at tackling social issues other than poverty as well.

For instance, Ohanian has invested in the elder companionship platform Papa. His investments have also helped Aidaly, a platform for empowering family caregivers. The Grand, a group coaching platform, is yet another company to have benefited from Ohanian’s backing.’
