Rick Macci, the former coach of Venus and Serena Williams, sees great potential in the young player. However, he also feels that there are some loopholes in her game that need amending.

Venus and Serena Williams’ former coach sees potential in Coco Gauff

Gauff has become an on-court favorite because of her astounding gameplay and happily quirky attitude. The player has not just performed well on the singles circuit but is doing extremely well in the doubles. She is currently world no. 3 in the doubles category and World no. 7 in singles.

In a recent interview, the former coach of Venus and Serena Williams talked about Gauff’s potential. He said, “Coco Gauff has a lot of ability. She has great foot speed, a great backhand, and some holes in her game that needs to be taken care of.”

When asked about who could dominate women’s tennis, Macci named her. He said, “If anyone of them could dominate, it would be Coco, cuz she has a little more firepower, and she’s younger.”

However, he also wants her to work on some other aspects that are creating hurdles for her. He said, “But there’s a little bit of a flaw on the forehand that needs to be corrected, and her serve- it’s a weapon but it’s a liability. It’s all biomechanics.”

Macci concluded by saying, “If I was gonna put money on it, it would be Coco, who has the most potential to be a multiple Grand Slam champion.”

How has Gauff been performing?

The American player reached her first grand slam finals at the French Open this year. However, the incumbent World no. 1 Iga Swiatek defeated her in straight sets. Apart from that, she also reached the quarter-finals of the US Open but could not get ahead after that.

Recently, she played against Victoria Azarenka in the quarter-finals of the Guadalajara Open, where the Belarusian player defeated her.

Despite all that, her performance throughout the year has been astounding. World no. 7 has reached the later stages of many tournaments. And since 2005, she has become the youngest player to qualify for the WTA Finals, which will happen in Texas.
