The older the wine, the more it is loved. Similar is the case with tennis legend Serena Williams. After gracing the tennis court for close to three decades, the 23-time Grand Slam champion recently announced her plans for retirement. At 41 years of age, the former World No. 1 is playing her final tournaments before her farewell at the US Open.

Yesterday, the 10th of August, fans of Williams got a glimpse of what Serena’s farewell would look like. Following a first-round win, Williams suffered a second-round loss at the 2022 Rogers Cup. While some fans gulped their sorrow, others took to their Twitter handles, expressing themselves.

Fans shower love on Serena Williams

Serena winning the first round of the Rogers Cup came in as a ray of hope. However, seeing their player suffering a second-round loss left the fans in nothing less than heartbreak. Even though Serena suffered a handful of early-round losses earlier in her career, this loss had a much more heartbreaking impact on the fans.

Saddened by the loss, a fan wrote, “i’m not ready to say goodbye.”

Despite giving her best on the court, Williams struggled to outplay Belinda Bencic, suffering a straight-set loss to the Olympic champion. With the US Open just around the corner, the only other major tournament left is the WTA 1000 Cincinnati. While fans hope to see Williams on the court, they tend to prepare themselves for saying goodbye to the Champion.

Thinking about the US Open, a fan wrote, “God…. I am NOT ready for New York!!! I’m gonna be crying the whole damn match!!! Today was hard enough We LOVE you, Serena!!” Similar to this, another fan added, “This moment is the beginning of her goodbyes and I’m already in tears! We love Serena Williams and always will!”

Throughout the career, Serena has been one of the most competitive players, wanting to have a positive result in every match she plays. However, her match in Toronto seemed much more than the result. Expressing views upon it, another fan wrote, “Of those nights when the result matters less. Toronto farewell to Serena Williams. After the defeat to the Olympic champion, there are only two tournaments left to say goodbye to the sports icon.”

Being her last match at the Rogers Cup, Serena was presented with a token of love and appreciation from the tournament. An act which evidently left Serena weeping in tears. With a picture of Serena holding a bouquet, a fan wrote, “These situations devastate me. he’s crying don’t go beeee.”

Fans shed tears on the forthcoming retirement of Williams

Serena Williams is counted in the list of most respected players in tennis. Ever since the retirement announcement, fans have been coming up with innovative ideas to honor Williams. Another fan added, “Every single Serena Williams tennis match between now and her retirement should be aired on TV so people can soak up every last moment of her illustrious career. THANK YOU.”

Serena Williams is counted as one of the greatest sports personalities ever. Addressing Serena’s greatness, a fan took to his Twitter handle, counting Serena and boxer, Mohammed Ali in the same list.

“Serena Williams announcing her retirement from tennis probably didn’t make bigger news because 10 years from now she may come out of retirement and beat everyone again. She is, barring Mohammed Ali, the greatest single best athlete in the world. And she never got her due. Never,” he wrote.

Turning pro in 1995, Serena steadily climbed the ladder of success. Ever since then, she has been like a shining star, dominating the tour for two complete decades. Recalling the dominance, a fan said, “Not sure if I can ever move on from her era.”

Announcing her retirement, Serena is playing her final handful of tournaments. Needless to say, fans are hoping to cherish every single minute of Serena playing. However, it is also a fact that these fans would soon miss the presence of their favorite player in the coming future.

Not wanting to accept her absence from the tennis court, another fan wrote, “i am soon going to wake up in a world where Serena Williams is retired and i have no idea how i’m going to cope.”

Following a second-round loss at the Canadian Open, Serena is next expected to try her luck at the Cincinnati Open. After Cincinnati, Serena will next move to her final destination, the US Open. At 23 Grand Slam titles, Serena will look to eye record equaling 24th title, before bidding final goodbye to the sport.
