World number 1 Iga Swiatek has had an amazing year so far. After the retirement of Ash Barty, she has truly taken over the reign of women’s tennis. The 21-year-old has won two Grand Slam titles and in total eight of 16 tournaments, she played in this year. She has played 72 matches already and her body is surely reacting to the heavy toll.

In a recent interview, the 21-year-old spoke about the immense pain she had the night after her US Open final win.

Iga Swiatek opens up about the unbearable pain

In an interview, the world number 1 tennis star revealed how a 72-match season so far has affected her body. The 21-year-old has performed exceedingly well and has won 64 matches. However, she was in immense pain the next night after her first US Open title win. Here’s what she said.

“The cramps were so unbearable, I could barely sleep. During such an event, there is a lot of stress. It is not until the end that you start to realize how hard it was. When you no longer are obliged to perform, when the adrenaline fades away, and the excitement cools off – that’s when you feel it. The night after the final was very difficult.”

Swiatek further added, “Suffering sleeplessly, I thought to myself, that there are athletes who experience such pain each time they perform, and I felt lucky that in tennis it rarely happens. I survived and it’s all good now…”

She further stated that it was a difficult time for her. However, she desires a long vacation once the season is done.

Swiatek will next be competing in the WTA Finals at Texas. It is the competition between the top 8 WTA performers of the year.

Swiatek will be the only Grand Slam champion in the WTA Finals

After the retirement of Serena Williams, the world is in search of the next dominant champion in women’s tennis. If one look at the records, there always have been at least two Grand Slam champions every year in the draw for the WTA Finals. However, in 2022 for the first time in the last 52 years, there’s only one player with a Grand Slam title. That’s Iga Swiatek.

Talking about the other Grand Slam champions, Ash Barty retired earlier this year while Wimbledon 2022 champion Elena Rybakina failed to qualify for the event.
