Is it genuinely hard to get a compliment from Serena Williams? Maybe for many that’s the case, but for Coco Gauff, she is already in the WTA legend’s good books. Well, she keeps showering Gauff with countless compliments, but the latest one might be the most important of all. What did she say?
During a recent social media live, she chose Gauff as her favorite, hinting that she might find a continuation of her legacy in the 2023 US Open winner. Williams revealed the player she likes to watch currently besides Stefanos Tsitsipas and it is America’s own Coco Gauff. Previously, during this year’s US Open, this Olympic gold-medalist legend dropped a great compliment for the 2023 US Open champion. “Coco also has a massive tennis IQ. I think she really uses her brain out there. I think she can really rely on her serve; obviously, her movement is great … and I just love her mental toughness and her mental fortitude,” said Williams highlighting her admiration for Gauff’s indomitable spirit on the court. Now, during a skincare live on TikTok, this tennis legend again showered her love for Coco Gauff.
Williams started a live on TikTok letting her followers ask her random question. In that session, one person asked her which player she currently enjoys watching and William’s response brought Gauff’s name. “Who’s my favorite person, my favorite player to watch now besides Stefanos Tsitsipas? Watching Coco! She is super cool, I love watching her! Yeah,” Williams responded with a smile, clearly expressing that she adores Gauff and probably finds her old spirit in the WTA number three.

However, Serena Williams‘ love for Gauff isn’t new. When the Delray Beach star qualified for her debut Grand Slam tournament with an impressive performance at the qualifiers round, this former WTA number one star had a great prediction about her. “She’s just impressive all around, from her personality to the way she plays. I think it’s just all super impressive,” said Williams showcasing her faith in Gauff’s talent and skills. Williams was definitely over the moon when one year after Gauff bagged her debut major title in the Flushing Meadows in 2023. The Olympic gold-medalist legend shared Gauff’s photo with the trophy on her IG story and offered a great shout-out to the WTA number three. “Ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!! Amazing!!!!!!!! @cocogauff” wrote Williams expressing how impressed she was with Gauff’s performance.

This US Open winner adores Williams and often talks about how she inspired Gauff to live her dreams. However, their first meeting was quite accidental, something that people would call a fate-driven meeting. Gauff previously revealed in an interview on Hair Me Out on the Refinery29 YouTube channel that she was practicing near where Williams was filming a commercial. “Serena was actually filming a commercial at the same location where I was practicing, ‘I thought I was seeing a stunt double at first, but then it hit me, and I was beyond excited! She came over to offer me advice and had a quick chat with me,'” said Coco Gauff showcasing how her debut meeting with the icon was not just interesting but also equally heartwarming.
She further expressed how Williams has been her icon helping her to carve her legacy in the sport. “I admire Serena’s style, her hair, and how she confidently showcases her curls and braids, I aspire to embrace diversity in my hairstyles. When you look and feel good, it certainly elevates your game,” Her words echoed how Williams is also her style inspiration.
