Williams’ friendship with Wozniacki is no secret. Despite having an intriguing rivalry, the two were best of friends and even went out for outings regularly. Interestingly, the WTA Finals match between them in 2014 was a turning point in their relationship. Williams went on to defeat Wozniacki in three sets and the latter wasn’t happy after the match. Subsequently, Williams went on to see Wozniacki in the locker room and consoled and apologized to her. This endearing act from Williams grew the seeds of their friendship and the rest is history.

Not only have the two enjoyed their outings together but also supported each other during their tough times. One such tough moment was after Wozniacki announced the split with Rory McIlroy. Subsequently, Williams did something that only a true friend could.

Caroline Wozniacki on Serena Williams: ‘She was really there for me when I needed her the most’

The Danish tennis star had an unfortunate split with golfer Rory McIlroy. The two were engaged and McIlroy called it off over a phone call, which left Wozniacki heartbroken. The separation was so tough that the Danish player isolated herself to overcome the heartbreak. During those tough times, Serena Williams stood by her and supported her.

Interestingly, when Serena’s initial calls went unanswered, she threatened Wozniacki that she would fly to her and beat her door down if she didn’t answer. As Wozniacki later described in the interview, “And I am so glad I did. She wasn’t pitying me like a lot of people were. I mean, it’s not like anyone died. I was in shock, but she was really helpful because she had been through it before. She didn’t sugarcoat it, and she didn’t look down on me. She was really there for me when I needed her the most, and that’s why I think our friendship is so strong now.”
