Coco Gauff won the US Open in a blazing fashion this year. However, her victory in the American slam did not come without some drama. She faced Laura Siegemund in the first round bout and the German player found herself at the bad end of the crowd. Months after the match, she has opened up about the moment, while giving Gauff and her team a bit of the blame.

Siegemund is referring to the moment when she received a penalty for taking too long to serve. While she did not think over it much and moved on to serve for another point, she found herself at the end of several jeers.

During a point in Siegemund vs Gauff, the German was serving. The regulation is that each player will have 25 seconds to serve, and if they don’t do it in those 25 seconds, they get a time violation. A second-time violation, and they lost the point. Siegemund was aware of this, but she was tired of serving within the time limit. She talked about the situation in the Craig Shapiro podcast.

She received a time violation but moved on. However, drama eventually ensued. “So, but it just became a drama about nothing. And I honestly, I didn’t care really much, because I was just trying to focus on the match. Of course, it’s not nice if there, if the audience, like, turns a great tennis match, completely around.”

She further explained the fault of Gauff and her team in this situation, “Also, fueled by her behavior, I have to say her coach and her are, you know, all of her team kind of really fueled that where in return, I have to say I didn’t do anything against the audience, or to fuel the situation, I just played my pace.”

The German doubles star said that she doesn’t often get the main courts, so not many people care. But in the Arthur Ashe arena, many people were offended because they wanted the American player to win.
