‘That Wasn’t Surprising for Me’ – Serena Williams Opens up About Where She Went Wrong During Her First Round Defeat at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships

Being out of the tour for a year, the return of Serena Williams had been one of the most anticipated events this year. Ending the wait, the 23-time Grand Slam champion finally made a comeback at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. However, things didn’t seem to go as expected for Williams as she suffered a first-round defeat to French player Harmony Tan in three sets.

The loss undoubtedly left a sense of disappointment for Williams and her fans. However, overcoming the loss, a positive Serena hoped to come back strong next year. Williams later opened up about her loss.

Serena Williams gives an account of her loss

Following the loss, Serena Williams headed for the post-match press conference. During the press conference, Williams was questioned about her physical fitness. Adding on to it, she was also questioned whether she felt surprised by her good on-court fitness during the match.

Prior to entering Wimbledon, Serena played doubles with Ons Jabeur at Eastbourne. Following that, she also hit the practice courts of Wimbledon on a couple of occasions. Even though a year lag was clearly visible in her game, she seemed fine in terms of movement and physical requirements.

During her press conference, Williams saidtarted, “Physically I was fine. Last couple of points I really started to feel it. But I’m moving well, I’m getting a lot of balls back and I’m moving well in practice as well. So, that wasn’t surprising for me because I knew I was doing that well.”

Even though Harmony outplayed the seven-time Wimbledon champion, the two made sure to put on a mega show. With neither of the two willing to give up, Williams and Harmony went neck to neck against each other. However, after much effort, it was Tan who outplayed Serena 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 in 3 hours and 11 minutes.

Over the years, Serena has played a number of intense and long matches. However, unlike the ones she won, this match had a different result. Adding to everyone’s surprise was Seren’a reason of losing.

Going further in the conversation, Serena admitted, “I didn’t practice for a three-hour match. I guess that’s where I went wrong.”

Despite the loss, Williams and her fans are happy to see her back. Serena’s goal now is to try her luck at the US Open. Heading back to the USA, Williams is set to soon hit the hard practice courts of her home country.
