Being a history-rich sport, tennis has given birth to numerous on-court rivalries. However, one that often tops the list is that of Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. First facing each other in 1973, the two treated the tennis world with some of the most cherished matches in their 1.5-decade-long rivalry. However, despite being the greatest competitors on-court, the two made sure to not let it affect their bond off the court.

Despite being on-court rivals, the two shared a great bond of friendship. Even though both have been out of the game for years now, it clearly hasn’t affected their friendship. This seems quite evident by their regular social media exchanges. Giving a glimpse of their friendship, Evert recently partook in an epic prank along with Navratilova.

The iconic rivalry of Evert and Navratilova

As mentioned earlier, the two kicked off their rivalry in the year 1973 in Round of 16 of the Akron Open. Taking it as a stepping stone, the two moved ahead, playing some of the greatest matches of all time. After 1.5 decades of action, Navratilova and Evert last played in the finals of the 1988 Chicago Open.

Being two of the greatest players of their time, Evert and Navratilova had most of their meetings in the final rounds of tournaments. While Evert won the inaugural match of their rivalry, it was Navratilova who stood in the winner’s position in their last clash. Crediting her aggressive serve and volley game, Navratilova also led the head-to-head race 43-37.
