‘There Is Nobody Behind Me’ – When Martina Navratilova Revealed a Response Given to Her Mother on Wanting to ‘Fight the Good Fight’

Martina Navratilova is largely credited for her massive on-court achievements. However, what is often overlooked in her case is her contribution to the LGBTQ community. Ever since her playing days, the 59-time Grand Slam champion has been outspoken about LGBTQ rights.
Following her retirement in 2006, Navratilova has shown her concern over the rights of the LGBTQ community. Going back in time, in 2018, Navratilova, in a conversation with a media house, opened up about an answer she gave to her mother while detailing how time has played a major role in the fight for LGBTQ rights.

Martina Navratilova recalls her mother’s question
The conversation started with Navratilova talking about her tennis career. However, going ahead, she soon had her focus on the rights of the LGBTQ community. Advancing in the conversation, Navratilova was questioned if she had a feeling of accomplishment and wanted someone else to become the new flag bearer in the fight.
The ones who follow Navratilova know very well about her feelings for the community. Both during her storied career and after retirement, the Czech-American always made sure to stand up for the community at all times. Replying to the question, the former World No. 1 started by recalling a question by her mother. “My mom used to ask me, ‘Why do you have to keep the rainbow flag? Why do you have to walk in the front row?” she said.

As mentioned earlier, Navratilova has been a part of the movement ever since her playing days. Considering her mental and physical investment in the movement, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that she had the clearest view about the situation back then. Going ahead in the interview, she opened up about the answer to her mother’s question. “I am like, ‘Well, there is nobody behind me,” she said.
