The American tennis prodigy, Coco Gauff, recently talked about the absence of the legendary Williams sisters on the Tour and its effect on other players. The 18-year-old rising star has played against some of the greatest players on the WTA tour since turning pro, including Venus Williams. In fact, the world No. 4 defeated the American tennis legend during both their meetings on the WTA tour.

Gauff participated in the WTA Finals, her first appearance in the year-end tournament. During the press conference after her match against Caroline Garcia, Gauff talked about facing a lot of new faces and the challenges during the event. Meanwhile, she also mentioned the Williams sisters’ impact on the tour.

Coco Gauff talked about the lasting impact of the Williams sisters

As a first-time participant in the WTA Finals, Coco Gauff was asked about facing new opponents during an interview. She was further asked about her compatriot, Jessica Pegula, who is also among the four first-time participants in the tournament. Gauff answered by stating that she hasn’t talked to Pegula about facing new challenges in the WTA Finals.

However, the world No. 4 tennis player further discussed the importance of facing new faces on the tour. She went on to say that the WTA “tour is always evolving” because of new opponents and also the challenges that come along with them. She added, “There’s always going to be someone coming up and doing well. I think that’s what makes it exciting.”

The American tennis prodigy then talked about two of the greatest tennis players of all time, Venus and Serena Williams. She stated, “Obviously, when Serena and Venus are playing, they were pretty much dominant players. But I feel like now it’s just a lot of new faces, which is great because you just never know who it is when you start a tournament.”

As a young first-time participant in the tournament, Gauff stated that every player has a chance to win the WTA Finals. She went on to say, “There’s not one dominant force there. I think that’s what makes it exciting.”

Gauff’s performance in the WTA Finals

A plethora of fans were excited to see the American teenager’s performance as a first-time participant in the tournament. However, Gauff didn’t get the perfect start to the WTA Finals, as she was defeated in the first group stage match. The French tennis player, Caroline Garcia, performed brilliantly to beat the world No. 4 tennis player.

In the second match, Gauff again tasted defeat at the hands of the Russian tennis player, Daria Kasatkina. Despite her disappointing singles outing, the 18-year-old will look for redemption in the doubles event of the tournament. The exciting pair of Gauff and Pegula will play against the Czech tennis duo of Kateřina Siniaková and Barbora Krejčíková in the third group stage match of the tournament.
