‘They Would Die’ – Venus and Serena Williams’ Childhood Coach Once Made an Emotional Statement About the Sisters’ Dedication

It’s been almost 30 years since Rick Macci coached Serena and Venus Williams to their peak performance. Macci coached William Sisters when they started training at a younger age.

 Legendary tennis coach Rick Macci once opened up about how he felt when he met the William sisters for the first time. He also considers Serena and Venus Williams his daughters and was glad that he could help them become the greatest players of all time.

Macci recalls when he first saw William’s sister play

When Macci saw the duo playing for the first time, he thought Williams was “just average”. Macci didn’t realize Serena’s potential until he saw her competitive side. When Serena’s coach recalledI’m sitting watching these guys hit the ball… They’re just average junior players in the 12 and under,”

But then, when he saw them play, his perspective totally changed. He saw a different side of the competition the sisters hold. “I never saw, in all the years that I’ve been teaching, even to this day, a complete metamorphosis [like that],” he says. 

When he saw them play a match, he realized that they have great potential for the game. He quoted “They would die, I mean to die–both of ’em–to get to the ball. Their thirst for the competition was brutal.” Ever since then, they have turned out to be the greatest duo of all time.

Serena Williams has an incredible record at the US Open, winning it six times. Serena recently announced her retirement from tennis. The American played his first singles match of the year at Wimbledon, losing in the opening round. She later competed in the Canadian Open, defeating Nuria Parrizas Diaz 6-3, 6-4 in the first round. However, she lost in the second round to Belinda Bencic, 6-2, 6-4.

The 40-year-old then competed in the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati, where she lost in the opening round to Emma Raducanu. Given her age and the fact that she’s only played four singles matches since Wimbledon last year, expectations for this year’s US Open aren’t too high for her.

But Williams still has a little bit left in the tank and can make a ruckus in New York. She hopes to dazzle viewers at Flushing Meadows and this seems to be the last chance in her illustrious career to do so.
