One major part of becoming a sports professional is addressing the media. Reporters launch hundreds of questions, and the player has to answer to the best of their abilities. However, these questions often end up being hostile in nature. Each player has a different approach to how they answer. Caroline Wozniacki is one tennis player who has an iron-clad strategy to answer questions designed by reporters to instigate the players in the interview.

Wozniacki’s strategy to fire back at the reporters is quite similar to Venus Williams’ approach. Queen V deals with provoking questions by shutting down the reporter as she demonstrated during the 2022 Wimbledon.

Caroline Wozniacki takes the higher ground

Wozniacki reached number 1 in 2010 and has since been a target for journalists. Being questioned about her game and matches, Wozniacki is no stranger to hostile questions. Having dealt with problematic reporters for so long, Wozniacki needed to develop a strategy to not leave a press conference fuming.

In a recent interview with Tennis Channel, Wozniacki talked about how she felt prior to press conferences. The Danish player said that players would of course understand what needs to be worked on during matches and during practice. “Obviously, when you get into press conferences, you hear it all the time. I heard it when I was number one with my playstyle, and it’s annoying.”

Further, Wozniacki also stated that she just remembers that she is much better than people sitting at the press conference hurling questions.  She said, You know, you just have to realize, the people that are sitting at the press conference, if they were as good as you are on-court, they wouldn’t be sitting there. So, you know, that’s kind of my way to think about it as the reason why I’m out playing on-court because I’m better than those asking questions.”

Wozniacki was not the only player who developed a way to deal with reporters.

Venus Williams ridicules reporter for hostile questions

Like Wozniacki, Venus Williams was another number 1 who was ready to fight with journalists over provoking questions. With her partner, Jamie Murray, Venus was playing in the mixed doubles of the 2022 Wimbledon. Serena partnered up with Andy Murray, Jamie’s brother, and were out for the singles version. A reporter tried to pit the elder Williams sister against Serena Williams.

The reporter asked Venus if they were playing just for the experience or to win against any opponent, including the team of their siblings. Venus ridiculed the question and immediately shut down the reporter for the problematic question. Wozniacki’s and Venus Williams’ strategies can help aspiring players deal with reporters trying to get a rise out of them.
