Serena Williams is ‘the One’
The new DirecTV commercial has all the classic tropes of the Matrix franchise. It has red and blue tennis balls that mimic the choice Morpheus gave to Neo. Furthermore, the ‘come-at-me’ hand gesture by Serena to her clone opponent across the net will invoke a cheer amongst fans of the franchise.
Serena Williams bends reality to her will as the stands get filled with clones of ‘Agent Smith’. Particularly, one baby Agent Smith catches her eye, as the classic Matrix-style black sunglasses grace his face.

This isn’t the 40-year-old’s first major franchise redo either. Williams was previously a part of DirecTV’s Wonder Woman advertisement as well, donning the golden tiara. The spot shows Serena armed with a tennis racket going up against a monstrous automated bowling machine. Hilariously, the battle ends up with tennis legend John McEnroe doused in ketchup!

Another spot had Serena’s tennis court being haunted by iconic monsters from horror franchises. It depicted Serena’s triple match point being interrupted by the likes of Leatherface and Pennywise the clown.
Will Serena be able to make it out of the Matrix and back to the real world in time for the Australian Open?
