Serena Williams is no less than a sensation in the world of tennis. Both she and her sister Venus have scripted history that the next generation will find difficult to match. Growing up, the legendary sisters weren’t playing in the luxury of leveled, well-maintained courts. With their dad, Richard, as their coach, the girls would toil every day after school.Looking back at those days, Williams has nothing but happiness to share. Although life wasn’t as luxurious and convenient as it is now, she learned the best lessons of her life in those days. In her book ‘On the Line’, Serena talks about her days in public courts.
Serena Williams could hear gunshots when she practiced with her sister Venus
Looking back at those days, Serena is reminded of how frightful they were. While her father constantly pushes her to not “dwell on the negative,” Meeka cannot help but be candid about those days.

One particular incident, or rather a memory, strikes out vividly in her mind. As it says in many articles about her, the stories of the shootings are real. As reported by ABC News, she said, “We could hear gunshots ringing out while we were playing, from all the drive-by shootings. That I remember full well, only the shots themselves didn’t sound all that terrifying until I learned what they were. “
As most children do not fear things they do not know, so was the case with Serena. “At first, I just thought someone was setting off firecrackers or popping some balloons, but once I learned what the sound meant it would shake me up pretty good.”

However, in those moments, she would always hear her father say something that would clear her mind of the distraction. “‘Never mind the noise, Meeka…’Just play.'”
Now that they have grown up to be tennis legends, Serena does not forget about the days of her childhood. She is still happy to reminisce about life, when it wasn’t as grand, but was joyfully simple.

What King Richard has to say about these incidents to Serena?
While she hit more sets with her mother, who is her closest confidante till today, Serena says that Venus played more with their dad. King Richard had a dream for his girls, and his wife shared his vision. Both parents dedicated themselves entirely to their girls- all five of them.
However, they did not have great practice equipment where they lived. As Serena reminisces in her book, the courts were in no great shape. They would have shards of broken glass everywhere with deep cracks in the cement. They were very poorly maintained and often weeds sprung up through the cracks. Not just that, they were quite unsanitary as well. The premises would be filled with beer bottles and plastic wrappers.

It is definitely a hard call to imagine Serena and Venus, former world no.1s playing in such courts. Still miles away from the glamour of international tournaments and Grand Slams, the sisters would practice under the strict eye of their father.
