“They just announced it, and that’s it,” Sabalenka explains. “Like some of the players just saw a tweet and were like, ‘Okay, we’re playing in Cancun.’ It’s just like they made the decision, and that’s it. That’s the problem. That they’re not asking all the players where they would like to play. I would like to be involved in these kinds of decisions. I have to play here. Having this ability to control these decisions would be really helpful.”

Her call for more player involvement in decision-making aims to ensure that players have a say in their schedules, venues, and overall well-being while competing at the highest level of the sport.

She expressed her thoughts about the decision coming so late in the year, along with placing the event in the rainy season. “It shouldn’t have come that late in the year, making this decision,” Navratilova mentioned. “Ultimately, Steve Simon has been the boss for 9 years, and here we are… to come to Cancun in the rainy season? You cannot be hoping it’s not gonna rain at a premier event for the WTA Tour. You have to own the bad decisions you made and make some choices after that.” With this long-dragged controversy, the possibility of witnessing a major change appears to be high enough.
