2023 has been one of the most difficult seasons for the Spanish tennis beauty Paula Badosa. After picking up a stress fracture injury in May last year, she appeared in only one tournament in the remainder of the 2023 season. However, last month she admitted that she was pain-free once again. But her recent walkover in Dubai has made the fans gutted over her repeated injury hiccups.

Her tears say it all. It has now become more of a mental setback than just a physical pain of what is supposed to be a back injury yet again. Paula Badosa lost the first set of her match against the world no.181 on Monday, before confirming her withdrawal. After, already missing out on the majority of last season and still facing issues with injuries. Badosa couldn’t help but sit back on a bench and cry. How did the fans react after seeing the former world no.2 in tears?

Paula Badosa was forced to take a retirement from a match for the second time in 2024. Last month she had to give a walkover at her Round of 16 match in Thailand Open. Now, unfortunately for the Spaniard, she had to again retire during her match against Switzerland’s Lulu Sun at the opening match of the Dubai Tennis Championships. Paula Badosa broke down in tears on Monday.

One of the fans said that back injuries are always hard to recover. According to him, it is much worse than a ligament or a tendon injury.

While others felt sad about how things had gone so far for the Spaniard over the last few months and wished her a quick recovery.

Another fan stated that this is perhaps more mental than physical at this point in time for Paula Badosa.

A few of them expressed their disappointment after seeing the former world number no.2 struggle to make herself fit for competitions around the world. Back injuries are always a tough thing to recover stated the Twitter user.

Some of them called it really heartbreaking to see the former world number 2, struggle. 

There are still two weeks left before the Indian Wells get started. Can Paula Badosa recover before that and make a comeback in California? Well, we’ll have to wait a bit to get this answer. But last month she had reflected on her struggles with injuries and here’s what she had said.

The 26-year-old Spaniard spoke about how much she loves competing during an interview last month. She also reflected on how she had badly missed the action in the last 6 months. “It’s an injury that you don’t have much under your control. Because at the beginning I thought, oh, I do more hours of treatment, I do more hours of this or that and I’m going to heal faster. Then I learned that just having patience, try to let it heal on its own.

She further went on to add, “But honestly it’s a very slow — I was going to say a bad word — but yeah, very slow process. It was a very tough process, especially mentally for me to accept all this. As I always say, I love to play tennis. I love to compete.

Recalling the tough phase in her career, she stated “So all of a sudden one day I had to stop completely and started to have like a normal life — not even a normal life. I had to stay on the couch. So imagine how boring was that.
