20-year-old Emma Raducanu recently withdrew her name from the Madrid Open. It came on the back of one of the most bizarre press conferences in the British star’s fledgling career. She used a limited number of words to express herself during the interview. Eventually, it became pretty clear that Raducanu was reeling from the effects of her niggling wrist injury.

The good news is that Raducanu will finally get the much-needed surgery. Unfortunately, though, she will have to sit out this year’s French Open and Wimbledon. The No.1 British women’s tennis player released an official statement on Instagram that revealed her situation.

For a professional athlete, it’s a nightmare to be sitting on the sidelines and watching their rivals compete. It was a similar situation for Emma Raducanu, who thought playing through the pain would be better than dealing with the disappointment of missing out on tournaments. In the end, however, she had to listen to her body after her sudden withdrawal from the Madrid Open.

Expressing her disappointment of not being able to compete, in her Instagram post, Raducanu said that it ‘pains’ her that she would be missing the “summer events” on the WTA circuit owing to her injuries. The former US Open champion also added that she will need to have a “minor procedure” done on her ankle as well before she comes back to her full fitness.

She further stated, “It is safe to say the last 10 months have been difficult as I dealt with a recurring injury on a bone of both hands.” adding, “I tried my best to manage the pain and play through it for most of this year and end of last year by reducing practice load dramatically, missing weeks of training as well as cutting last season short to try [to] heal it. Unfortunately it’s not enough.”

What does Raducanu’s surgery mean for her WTA Tour ranking?

Raducanu’s WTA Tour ranking skyrocketed following her US Open win back in 2021. However, since then, Raducanu’s form has been on and off, leading to critics writing her US Open win off as a fluke. Even before she revealed her surgery news, she had slipped out of the top 100.  It would be crucial to mention that she began 2023 with a disappointing display at the Australian Open, crashing out of the tournament in the second round.  Since then, her performances throughout the year have not been able to meet the expectations of tennis fans around the world.

Now that she has officially announced that she will be missing both the 2023 French Open and Wimbledon Championships, things don’t look too good for Raducanu on the ranking front. However, in the long run, tennis fans should be hopeful of seeing the very best of Raducanu once again following her rehabilitation and recovery.
