The tennis sister duo of Venus and Serena Williams are undoubtedly a great inspiration and have paved the way for younger generations. Their legacies as Black women who dominated the sport will certainly live on in the sport for a long time. Currently, the 18-year-old Coco Gauff, who is competing in the San Diego Open, defeated Robin Montgomery, who is ranked 294 in the WTA rankings, in a competitive match.

After the match, she shared a proud moment while talking about the two tennis giants whose legacies she wants to emulate herself.

Coco Gauff believes she is a product of Williams’ legacy

In the post-match interview, the young tennis sensation Coco Gauff talked about how she felt playing against an African-American competitor on the court. She has always been open about talking about Venus Williams and Serena Williams and how they would have felt while watching two 18-year-old African-Americans playing on the same court.

She said, “It definitely affects the future a lot. If Serena and Venus saw this today; two 18-year-olds – both African-American – playing on the WTA 500 level – I think they would be proud.” Further, she referred to herself and Montgomery as the result of their bequest and said, “I think both of us are products of their legacy. I’m grateful that I had those examples to follow after, and I hope that I can maybe be an example myself.”

However, the weather created a lot of hurdles for both the tennis stars to have a match. The world number sixth seed, who earlier advanced to her first French Open final, said that she tried to focus on the match rather than thinking that the match was delayed by two days because of the weather. Notably, the 18-year-old rose to the frame after she defeated elder Williams’ sister back in the Wimbledon 2019 initial round.

Gauff advances to the next round

Canadian player Bianca Andreescu, who previously won the US Open championship in 2019, will be the American tennis star’s next opponent in the Round of 16. For the two of them, this will be their first encounter.

But the American tennis player has had a wonderful year so far. She and her doubles partner Jessica Pegula won the women’s doubles event at the Canadian Open this year. And she single-handedly advanced to the quarter-finals of the US Open as well.
