Fans witnessed a huge upset in the quarter-finals of the WTA Luxembourg Open 2021. Facing Ludmilla Samsonova, Tokyo Olympics 2020 Gold medalist Belinda Bencic suffered a humiliating defeat as she lost in straight sets. The final scoreline of the match was 1-6, 4-6.

Set-1: Ludmilla Samsonova stuns Belinda Bencic

Samsonova got off to a great start as she won the first three games consecutively after breaking in the second game. Even though Bencic saved a break-point in the fourth game and reduced the margin to 1-3, she was helpless against the powerful forehands of Samsonova.

As a result, after winning the fifth game, the Russian player broke in the sixth game yet again and was now leading 5-1. Serving for the set, she didn’t make any mistakes and won the set 6-1 in jus 31 minutes.

Set-2: Game, Set, Match for Ludmilla Samsonova

World No.12 Bencic got off to a great start in the second set as she won the first game quite easily. However, Samsonova equalised the scoreline at 1-1 in the very next game.

The Russian carried forward her momentum and broke in the third game before winning her next service game as well. Therefore, she established a healthy 3-1 lead over her opponent at the end of the fourth game.

Although the Swiss player tried her level hard, she failed to break past Samsonova. The one who served continued to win after this and finally Samsonova conquered the set 6-4, and thus, won the match on her first match-points. With this win, she has now advanced to the semi-finals of the Luxembourg Open 2021.
