Serena defeated her elder sister in straight sets on the clay courts in straight sets 7–5, 6–3. Going ahead, she repeated a similar victory at the grass-court Grand Slam Wimbledon and won it 7–6, 6–3. In the rematch of the 2001 US Open finals, where Venus defeated Serena, the younger sister avenged the defeat in 2002.
The young Williams did not seem to give any chance to her sister at the 2002 US Open finals and left her baffling 6–4, 6–3. Interestingly, Venus is the only player to have defeated Serena twice at the US Open in 2001 and 2005. The series of Serena’s victories continued the next year as well. She played two finals against her sister in 2003 and won both in three-setter matches. The Australian Open victory came 7–6(4), 3–6, 6–4, and the Wimbledon was achieved, 4–6, 6–4, 6–2. However, Venus believes that the situation could have been different if it was not for her sister in the finals.

This is not the first time when Venus has admired her younger sibling with such remarks. In an earlier interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she was seen singing praises for her sister’s determination. “The fearlessness with which she approached the game was something I’ve always really admired. She doesn’t accept second. She explicitly told me herself that she plays for first place.” While their rivalry has remained afresh for their fans, Serena did not like that herself.
