Remember Martina Hingis’ famous quote? “The Williams sisters brought a revolution to the game of tennis?” Makes sense, doesn’t it? Well, The legendary sisters have often talked about their fierce on-court competition and the great bond they share. Now, Serena Williams made a quirky remark about her elder sister Venus Williams’ Major wins highlighting that they are truly the icons of the sport who took sisterhood and competition to the next dimension altogether.
Williams had an impressive revelation about her elder sister Venus’ Grand Slam record. Venus won seven Grand Slam titles – five at Wimbledon and two at the US Open, whereas her sister has a marvelous record of 23 Grand Slam trophies. The sisters met nine times during Grand Slam finals and Serena defeated her elder sister in seven of them. Their former coach Rick Macci once commented that if Serena hadn’t been there, her elder sister would have won 15 to 20 major titles. This comment received another spotlight when the younger of the Williams sisters attended the NY Times DealBook Summit and was asked to share her opinion on this.
“Absolutely! I mean she would. That’s about the time we played each other in the finals if were not to mention semifinals and quarterfinals. We had this rule like if we played against each other before the finals, we had to go and win the tournament cause there was like you know there was if it had to be each other, we had to go and win the tournament. But yeah, I think Venus would have definitely had at least minimum 15 maybe more,” Williams said. Her words echoed her admiration for her sister’s incredible talent in the sport. She concluded, “If I didn’t have her, I would have minimum 30.” After Williams’ response, people laughed at her enjoying their sisterly equation. At the same time, they admired Williams’ respect towards Venus’ achievements and hard work despite having a milestone that is bigger than Venus’.

Interestingly, in one 2022 episode of Ellen DeGeneres show, this Olympic gold-medalist legend revealed that she never quite liked playing against her big sister. The reason? Well! it is quite amusing. “To me, the most frustrating thing about playing against my sister is that it’s like playing against myself. I am pretty tough and she is pretty tough, so she gets every ball back, Every time I get a great serve, she’s [gets it back]. It would be an ace against anyone else but she gets it back.” Williams’ words also highlighted her profound liking for her sister’s fierce playstyle while she revealed how this trait offered her tough competition on the court.

Williams has been asked many times about how the sisters lived in the same house and competed so fiercely against each other on the court. In her response, the younger one among the Williams sisters surprised everyone. “There was no separation at all. Looking back, I don’t know how we dealt with that. We were so close, we grew up so close. My family was like, ‘No fighting, you girls are always going to be sisters and that’s that,'” she said. Her response highlighted how close she was to Venus Williams. She further explained how living with her elder sister for a long time helped her to figure out their equation. “But we actually lived together until I got married, which wasn’t that long ago. We just always lived together. I think that helped our relationship. We had to figure out a way to work it out. We had to communicate, you know, we had to have those difficult conversations. I think we just, without even realizing, leaned into that. As long as I was winning,” she concluded.
