Serena Williams didn’t enjoy a great start to her clay-court season this year. The tennis queen returned to the court after almost three months, but her match didn’t go as per her plans. She lost to Nadia Podoroska in straight sets in the first round of the Italian Open 2021. The final scoreline of the match was 6(6)-7(8), 5-7.
Williams hasn’t played well on clay in the recent past. Her match against Podoroska was her 1000th match on the WTA Tour and she was surely looking for a much better outcome than this. After the shocking result, her coach Patrick Mouratoglou made some amendments to her schedule.
Her earlier plan was to head straight to Paris after the Italian Open 2021. However, now, she is in Parma, Italy where she’ll be playing at the WTA 250 Emilia-Romagna Open 2021. It is the first edition of the tournament and Serena will look to regain her momentum on clay at the tournament.
