Chris Evert seems to be winning her war against ovarian cancer. The American tennis legend, who won 18 majors during her incredible career, was recently in Delray Beach for the Billie Jean King Cup qualifier. She must have enjoyed Team USA’s stellar display against Austria. However, for Evert, getting the opportunity to meet Billie Jean King was more important.

In a recent interview with The Palm Beach Post, Evert laid bare her admiration for Billie Jean King. Evert also mentioned Martina Navratilova as she reflected on a special connection that goes well beyond the tennis court.

Evert’s appearance at the Billie Jean King Cup qualifier was special as she bagged an award. It celebrated her presence across eight USA teams in the Federation Cup, which was the previous avatar of the Billie Jean King Cup.

However, despite her feats in tennis still being recognized, Evert chose to talk at length about her respect for King. “She’s probably the most driven person I’ve known in my life. Her vision was unbelievable when it came to women’s team sports.”

Evert also brought up her friendship with another American tennis icon, Martina Navratilova. According to Evert, not many of her peers are in touch with Navratilova and Billie Jean. “I’ve remained very close to Billie Jean and Martina, more than anyone else who played then”. When Navratilova had to fight cancer, Evert became one of her pillars of support.
