And she will say goodbye to the sport at the major where it all began, the 2022 US Open.

In order to advance to the third round of the US Open 2022, tennis legend Serena Williams defeated Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit, ranked world number two, in three sets. Williams triumphed 7-6, 2-6, 6-2. At a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium, the enthusiastic fans once more encouraged the 40-year-old Williams. 

Nevertheless, Williams displayed a champion’s attitude to regain the upper hand in the decider, breaking Kontaveit twice before securing victory. Williams will return to Arthur Ashe Stadium on Thursday to compete in the women’s doubles, where she will play alongside her elder sister Venus Williams for the first time since 2018.

The six-time Flushing Meadows winner will compete on Friday for a spot in the fourth round of the singles draw. She will compete against Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in the next round.
