“I saw Ash Barty today on TV. I don’t know if she’s still here… She’s brought so much light to tennis in Australia and so much more excitement,” Azarenka said, as she held the mic after her first victory of the year against Anna Kalinskaya.

Despite her short yet remarkable career, Barty is considered being a point of inspiration for tennis enthusiasts across Australia. “I feel like we owe it to her to continue to improve tennis in Australia,” Azarenka added, highlighting the responsibility of her and other compatriots to carry on the amazing efforts led by Ash Barty.

Azarenka’s thoughts on WTA stars breaking stereotypes

Besides expressing her excitement over spotting Ashleigh Barty in the stands of Brisbane International, Azarenka also took her chance to open up about a topic that every WTA star was proud to hear. “I’m very excited to see players are coming back. I’ve said it a few years ago already. I think we broke the stereotype that you become an athlete and have family,” she said, relating to her situation of getting back on the tennis courts after becoming a mother.

“This definitely has been broken. It’s actually evolved more and more. The testament of that is how many players are feeling comfortable and confident coming back and continue being on tour,” Vika added.
