Negativity pushes you to be the best version of yourself. The newly crowned US Open champion Coco Gauff has taken that statement way too seriously. Gauff has become one of the most formidable tennis players since she turned pro. The American has been known to speak her mind when it comes to people who spew hate on her name. Coco has stayed ahead of her haters by proving them wrong. Making bold statements and following them through is one of her strong suits. A similar incident happened recently.

Coco made it to the round of 32, against Croatian Petra Martic at the China Open. She also released a statement to counter the hate she has been receiving online. This is not her first rodeo, as the teen had made a similar statement earlier during the US Open.

Coco’s performance in the China Open speaks for her consistency. She opened up about her process to motivate herself. However, she did address that it’s her way and might not work for others.

The US Open champ said, “I feel like my brain just works different.. I still have the filters on my Instagram. I don’t see anything. I see the comments. I used to not be on Twitter at all. I’m still really not on Twitter much. But sometimes you get caught up in the scroll. The way the page is, the accounts that you interact with, you see yourself.”

She further added, “Obviously I see about myself, positive & negative.. I wouldn’t say negativity is something that’s welcome.. it’s more, something that I draw inspiration from. I wouldn’t recommend everybody to do that. Most of the time it’s negative things, but it’s not like life-threatening things. Some of those comments can get out of hand. But for the most part, I don’t know, it’s weird, maybe I feed from negativity. That’s weird. A lot of players don’t like it. For me, I’m very stubborn. I like to argue. I like to prove people wrong. My agent & my team advise not to comment back, so I use my racquet to do it.”

Coco confesses the fact about drawing motivation from negativity, which is quite unusual. Her talking about thriving on hate is a very candid thing to say. Gauff speaks on how she keeps Twitter away but latches onto it now and then. Going through the comments, she comes across both negative as well as positive ones.

As per Coco, the negativity online is not a very serious affair. Although she takes every word seriously, she’s been advised not to comment back by her team. Gauff lets her racquet do the talking. Coco made a serious impact earlier this year at the US Open.

It is no secret that Coco beat the current World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the finals of the US Open. Even though she started slow with the first set being 2-6, the young champ soon caught up to play the remaining two sets with absolute dominance. Coco defeated Sabalenka 6-3 6-2 in the last two sets. Even at that point, Coco addressed her haters. In the trophy presentation ceremony, she said:

“Thank you to the people who didn’t believe in me. To those who thought they were putting water on my fire, you were really adding gas to it. Now I’m really burning so bright right now.”

Seems like Coco knows her way around words. She let them know that it was their hate that motivated her to pull off this wonder. While they might keep on doing the same, Gauff is attaining success nonetheless.
