Leylah Fernandez, the Canadian tennis ace, suffered a gruesome leg injury recently. The young blood, while playing for a seat in the semifinals of the French Open, incurred a grade 3 stress fracture. Though in the tournament, that showed initial round exit to players like Naomi Osaka, and Simona Halep. Her quarterfinals run is enough to prove the caliber she harbors.

She is now gearing up for the last Grand Slam of the season. The 2021 finalist, having her best majors record coming from the US Open, will look forward to furthering her reach. However, before that, she decided to thank the people who aided her run last year.

Leylah Fernandez expresses herself

Fernandez recently took a trip down memory lane and expressed her gratitude to people who stood by her side. She took on Instagram to write a heartfelt letter to her family and team. And wrote, “I can’t help but reflect on this past years on the night before the US Open. What a whirlwind it has been. With tears of joy, heartbreak, determination, discipline, and growth. I wouldn’t change a second.”

Thereafter, she thanked her sponsor and added, “To my team- your hard work, patient and love will never go unnoticed. And lastly, my family- who would I be without you all?”

“You have taught me to be the women I am today. My heart is full of gratitude for each and everyone.” The 19-year-old, after missing the entire grass swing, made a comeback in the American hard court season. Though due to the recovering injury and time off the court, she couldn’t execute impactful runs in Canadian and Cincinnati Masters.

What’s ahead of Fernandez?

Fernandez took an initial round exit in both Toronto and Cincinnati Open. Therefore, she isn’t really the favorite for the upcoming Grand Slam. However, keeping in mind her previous year’s run, fans are still holding hopes and will soon be cheering for her.

The World no.13 will clash with the French tennis professional Océane Dodin in the opening round of the Grand Slam. She will meet the 25-year-old for the first time in the hard courts of Louis Armstrong Stadium on August 30.
