When Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook would be rebranded as Meta, there was a considerable amount of excitement. Of course, the excitement didn’t merely stem from the rebranding of one of the biggest social media platforms. There was more to it. Meta promised a new era for social media users. It would be an era where the entire social media experience would be revolutionized via the ‘metaverse’. Unfortunately, the mammoth investments worth $120 billion that came with Zuckerberg’s promises mostly resulted in losses. Recently, Serena Williams‘ husband Alexis Ohanian took to Twitter and explained to followers why the ‘metaverse’ didn’t fail despite Meta’s failure.

Through a series of insightful tweets, Ohanian delved deeper into the problems that dragged Meta down. The Reddit co-founder also asked a few pertinent questions that exposed Meta’s greatest underlying issues.

According to Ohanian, “Meta pitched a VR world where a consumer could wander the halls of a digital mall and purchase items from their favorite stores.” However, Ohanian said that the projects that followed Zuckerberg’s initial promises “were just lazy reiterations of the physical world.”

Ohanian also asked, “why would anyone prefer these types of experiences over popular and simpler alternatives? What are they 10Xing?”

It’s fair to say that Zuckerberg will find it hard to disagree with Ohanian’s understanding of what went wrong with Meta.

Ohanian claims that the metaverse existed way before Meta arrived on the scene

In another Instagram story, Ohanian explained to followers why he thinks the metaverse predates Meta. “In reality, the metaverse has already existed (and thrived!) for years”. Ohanian went on to cite the likes of Roblox, a game, and Instagram, to prove his point.

Ohanian concluded by saying, “The metaverse will continue to find growth and success through organic experiences from all corners of the internet – it can’t all be contained by a single, imposed platform”.
