Brady was forced to quit against Jelena Ostapenko in the Cincinnati Open two years ago. Despite leading the match, she was unable to continue due to a painful knee injury. What followed was two years of uncertainty while dealing with repeated knee problems. Brady began to worry if she’d ever play again when she suffered the injury more than 18 months ago. Why did Jennifer Brady take a hiatus?

Jennifer Brady announced a long break from the sport in 2021 following the Cincinnati Open to address her ailments. A brutal stretch of injuries, paralyzing inactivity and profound doubt, plagued her for almost two years. Brady even had to undergo surgery for her injury, which prolonged her hiatus even further. But the American player is back on tour now and aims to emulate and eventually move past her career-high ranking of 13 once again.

Who blew out Brady’s knee?

No player is responsible for the injury Brady sustained in 2021. During her match against Jelena Ostapenko in the 2021 Cincinnati Masters, Brady led the match 7-6, 4-5. But a freak accident in the 10th game of the second set forced her to retire and go on hiatus in order to recover. It eventually stretched to two years, and Brady fell far out of the top 1000 during this time.

This year, she returned to the tour, and in a freak coincidence, she faced Ostapenko in the National Bank Open in Montreal. The two played each other in the opening round, where Brady won the first set. In the following set, Ostapenko was not ready to give up and bageled the comeback star. However, the American did not let it faze her and beat the Latvian player in the third set to seal a memorable comeback.

How did Jennifer Brady make a comeback?

The former world No. 13 had big plans for a comeback this year. Talking to Rennae Stubbs earlier this year, Brady was set to return to the sport in the French Open. However, some injury issues persisted, which caused her to drop out of the tournament. But she was in full flight at the Mubadala Citi DC Open, displaying the scintillating form that was last seen in the 2021 Australian Open.

She served well and hit twice as many winners as unforced errors (20). The 28-year-old American sped in and out of the corners, her trainers shrieking as she did so. The outcome was a 6-2, 6-1 first-round triumph over Anhelina Kalinina. It took a lot of effort from Brady to return to form. During the post-match interview, she said that she had to be extremely patient to return to her usual level.

She further said, “Lost a lot of my skills, my muscle mass — you know, I don’t really have a lot. Yeah, it took a lot of patience and staying disciplined. You know, just trusting the process.”
