How are tennis prize money winnings taxed in general?
While the prize money amount looks lucrative, here comes the sad part. Wuhan Open takes place in the country of China, where 20% withholding tax (WHT) is enforced on non-resident athletes for their income raised in China. On top of that, non-Chinese players are also bound to comply with the Individual Income Tax (IIT) for their earnings in China. The rates of IIT keep varying, between 3 percent and 45 percent depending on the total income. For non-resident athletes, it is calculated on a monthly or pre-transaction criteria.
Basically, the combination of WHT and IIT ends up hampering the total amount of income raised by the athletes. While initially the prize money may seem attractive, the final cuts end up leaving players underwhelmed.
However, the Chinese government has a solution to lower the impact of double taxation for non-resident players. There is a Double Tax Agreements (DTAs) for this purpose. Such treaties enable players to claim credit for taxes paid in China, which reduces their liability of paying further tax in their native countries. Still, the government back home also imposes a certain rate of tax.
Now, applying the estimated tax rate for foreign athletes participating in China, Wuhan Open prize money for the singles winner will receive a 20 percent tax cut in general.
- Winner’s prize money after 20 percent tax: $596,000 – 20% = $476,800
- Runner-up’s prize money after 20 percent tax: $351,003 – 20% = $280,802
