Ashlyn Krueger is an up-and-coming American Tennis player who is looking to make a name for herself. While she hasn’t managed to run deep in any of the big tournaments so far, she has shown she carries the potential to do well on the big stage. Yet, a tennis player is nothing without a good coach, and Krueger has found the perfect one to guide her to greatness.

Krueger has partnered with none other than the legendary Michael Joyce, who has coached some of the greatest players of the WTA. His most prominent student is Maria Sharapova, whom Krueger gets to hear a lot about during his coaching lessons.

Michael T. Joyce is a retired American tennis player who began his professional career in 1991. In April 1996, the right-hander peaked at World No. 64 in the ATP singles rankings. On the professional tour, he won three Challenger events and advanced to the fourth round of the 1995 Wimbledon Championship. He won the men’s singles at the Ojai Tennis Tournament in 2004. He finished 46-67 overall, going 1-10 against the top ten players.

The highlight of Joyce’s career has been his coaching career. Joyce coached Maria Sharapova and her father, Yuri Sharapova, from summer 2004 until January 2011, which was his most memorable run. During his time, Sharapova won three Grand Slam singles titles and reached the World No. 1 spot. Joyce then trained Jessica Pegula from 2012 to 2017 and helped her achieve her then-career-high rankings in singles and doubles.

Joyce would partner with Victoria Azarenka for eight months in 2017, as she returned to playing after maternity leave. However, they split as Azarenka cited family priorities, and Joyce became Johanna Konta’s coach. In October 2018, Joyce parted ties with Konta and began coaching Eugenie Bouchard. Joyce left Bouchard in April 2019 and began working with Tímea Babos just two months later.

Joyce then worked as a women’s tennis national coach for USTA Player Development in 2021, where he met Ashlyn Krueger and decided to guide her in her career.

Yeah, I mean, he was a USTA coach for a minute. So I was down there, and he picked me up, and we had a really good relationship. We just got along off the court really well. So I think that transpired on the court. But yeah, and he’s been coaching, oh my gosh, for so long, but an amazing player. So I know whatever he has to offer and whatever advice he has, you know, I listen.”

Additionally, Krueger also talked about how he shares stories of him coaching Sharapova to help her with her game. “Oh, so many stories. Every day, is a new story, but yeah, a lot of them are Maria because we have similar game styles and similar ways of play. So I listen to a lot of those.”
