American tennis legend Serena Williams recently played the last match of her glorious career. The 41-year-old used a peculiar term for retirement, calling it evolving away from tennis. For the last 27 years, tennis has been everything for Serena. The former world number one kept the sport on the top of her priority list. Serena had a difficult childbirth. She took some time to recover and be ready to return to court. However, it’s always difficult for athletes to manage motherhood duties along with their profession. In an old interview, Serena revealed the mixed emotions that she felt whenever Olympia cried.
The emotional challenges of being a mother
Back in 2018, Serena was a new mother. The most challenging time for a parent is the first few years when a baby communicates through its mother and has no voice of its own. Serena revealed that whenever Olympia would cry, she will get different emotions and it was hard to stay calm.
“Sometimes I get really down and feel like, Man, I can’t do this,” she says. “It’s that same negative attitude I have on the court sometimes. I guess that’s just who I am. No one talks about the low moments—the pressure you feel, the incredible letdown every time you hear the baby cry,” she said.
Serena further added, “I’ve broken down. I don’t know how many times. Or I’ll get angry about the crying, then sad about being angry, and then guilty, like, Why do I feel so sad when I have a beautiful baby? The emotions are insane.”
