Billie Jean King took meaningful steps to make tennis better. She has successfully run campaigns for young players, especially women, to enjoy sports fairly. Billie Jean King has given a heart to the sport by supporting black women along with Serena Williams.

19-year-old tennis star Coco Gauff has been an admirer of BJK. The young player is highly grateful and impressed by the 79-year-old former world number one for changing the perspective of tennis and the stage for those of her generation. BJK has also been highly impressed by Gauff and recently called her a ‘promise of greatness.’

In the press conference at BJK Cup, the former tennis star recalled Gauff’s speech at the Black Lives Matter protests. BJK was touched by Gauff’s thought process and made a positive prediction for Gauff – her becoming the president of the United States!

BJK said, “I listened to that and I go, ‘She’s the best.’ Can you imagine if she were No.1? Holy cannoli, what she could accomplish. The world’s open to her. Why not be the president of the United States? Whatever she wants. She’s had a good background, good people around her.”

Coco Gauff’s grandmother was reportedly appointed a leader at the women’s luncheon ‘Champions of Equity’ at the Delray Beach Tennis Center during the qualifiers of the Billie Jean King Cup played between USA and Austria.

After meeting Gauff’s grandmother, Yvonne Odom, BJK knew the roots of the thought process that Gauff has applied in life. She also made praised Gauff’s grandmother by saying, “Look who’s raised her. I finally got to meet her grandmother. What an influence to grow up in that environment. How can you not be special? Now that I met her, I have her number, I’m going to…call her. I care about civil rights, what she went through, the first child of color in Atlantic High School. I’m all over it.”

Gauff will have surely been inspired by BJK’s appreciation. She is currently channeling her resources for the ongoing BJK Cup.

Gauff paves her way to the quarterfinals at the BJK Cup

The 19-year-old Gauff battered Austria’s Julia Grabher with 7 aces in a 6-1/6-3 victory in the BKL Cup qualifier at the Delray Beach Tennis Center on Friday. She marked her win at her native place in just 63 minutes. Post-match, she talked about the thought process she used, constantly in the back of her mind. Playing in Delray, her native place, she was solely determined to win the game for the people of her town.

She recalled a 2013 match of the two great tennis players, Serena and Venus Williams, that took place there. In addition, she was supercharged by listening to the crowd cheering her name. She said, “Being from Delray, I had one goal and that was to protect this house. I was a little nervous going into it but I heard how loud they were cheering for me. I watched here a few years ago (2013) when Serena and Venus (Williams) played and it’s crazy for me to be on the team now.”

Coco Gauff will be opening her qualifier round with an Austrian tennis player, Sinja Kraus. It’s a wait to watch who paves her way to the semis of the BJK Cup. Perhaps with BJK herself so strongly on her side, Gauff will prevail again!
