‘Will Close the First Chapter’: Former US Open Champion Announces Emotional News

Australian tennis player and former US Open champion, Samantha Stosur has been one of the successful players belonging to the island continent in recent years. She has been on the Tour for a considerable amount of time – almost two decades. 

Recently, Stosur provided an emotional update that the Australian Open 2022 will be her last appearance in the singles category at a Grand Slam event. However, she will be competing in the doubles section for the upcoming season.

Last singles appearance for Sam Stosur

Stosur will be featuring in the first Grand Slam event of the year for the 20th time in her career. She thanks the governing body for providing her the opportunity to finish her career at home in Australia.

The 2011 US Open champion said, “I’m so excited and very grateful to play in my 20th AO in a couple of weeks’ time. A huge thank you to Tennis Australia for giving me this opportunity to finish my singles career at my home Grand Slam. It really means a lot to me to be able to finish in front of my family, friends, and Aussie fans who have stuck by me through thick and thin.”

Always an emotional send-off

There will be plenty of emotions as it is never easy to say goodbye to the things one likes to do. She wanted to finish her career in front of people who matter to her – be it family, friends, and the amazing Australian fans who always light up the atmosphere. 

The 37-year-old added, “I’m sure it’s going to be a mix of emotions but I wouldn’t want it any other way as I always thought I’d finish playing in Australia. I do however plan to play the rest of the year in doubles but this will close the first chapter of my career.

Besides the 2011 victory, she has won numerous titles in the doubles section. The Australian professional won her last doubles Major title at the US Open 2021. All in all, it has been an amazing career. We wish her all the best in her journey ahead.
