Not even a month ago, the 2021 film ‘King Richard’ received one of its biggest appreciations. The film was nominated for 6 Academy Awards. However, that was not all. Yesterday, 26th February, Will Smith, received the Outstanding Performance Award by the NAACP Image Awards for his masterful depiction of Richard Williams in the movie.

Apart from Outstanding Performance Male, ‘King Richard’ was also nominated in the categories of Outstanding Motion Picture, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, and Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture.

Will Smith wins big

Will Smith won the ‘Outstanding Performance’ award by the NAACP for his role in the movie ‘King Richard’; He bagged the award by outplaying other nominees such as Denzel Washington, Jonathan Majors, Lakeith Stanford, and Mahershala Ali.

In the movie, Will Smith took up the role of Richard Williams; The passionate father, and coach of two of the biggest tennis legends Serena Williams and Venus Williams. Justifying the role, Smith pulled up his dramatic skills, showing a highly driven man, having some heavy emotional baggage. The movie displays how the broken father overcame the hardships of life, training her daughters to become the greatest tennis players in the history of the sport.

Earlier this year, Smith received the first Golden Globe award of his career in the category ‘Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama)’ for his role in King Richards. Further, with this film, Will has also made a comeback in the Oscar nominations after 15 years. He has been nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role.

King Richard – The Movie

Written by Reinaldo Marcus Green, the Zach Baylin directorial ‘King Richard’ is a life story of Richard Williams, father and first coach of tennis legends Serena Williams and Venus Williams. Released on November 19th last year, the film features Will Smith in the role of Richard Williams, Aunjanue Ellis in the role of Oracene “Brandy” Price, along with Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton in the roles of Venus and Serena Williams respectively.

The Williams sisters, who were also the executive producers of the movie. They penned down emotional messages on the release of the movie. The 23-time grand slam champion, Serena Williams described the whole journey as ‘surreal’, as she went on to appreciate the whole cast and crew of the film. “No word describes it better than surreal. Just to see these incredible actresses and everyone behind it just putting this all together about our dad’s journey but, because of myself and my sister, it really is like, ‘Wow, OK, really? Are we really something?’”, she said.

On the other hand, Venus Williams said, ““It’s super emotional. I’ve seen the trailer, I’ve read the script, and every time I watch it my eyes are just watering.”
