Jasmine Paolini is having a wonderful time at the Italian Open this year. Before her second-round match, the Italian star was heard saying, “Rome is a tournament where all Italians want to perform well, but you have to stay calm and not have too many expectations. It’s wonderful to play in front of this crowd, who will surely be even more behind us compared to other years.” Now, she has not only reached the SF here but also become the first Italian player to reach this stage since her doubles partner Sara Errani (2014). The crowd was right behind her, cheering for each and every point that she hit in her previous match against Diana Shnaider. Seeing this hostile environment in Rome, her next opponent, Peyton Stearns, has already predicted what would be coming up for her next when she takes on the Italian in her next match.
In the QF, home favorite, Jasmine Paolini recovered from a set down and a 4-0 deficit in the second set to edge past the Russian by 6(1)-7,6-4,6-3. If we take a look at this epic battle, in the second set, when Shnaider seemed to have gotten the grip of the match, having won 12 of her previous 13 games, a rain delay seemed to perhaps do damage to her concentration. Speaking about this break, Paolini said, “I was extremely nervous, thank goodness it rained for 5 minutes. I relaxed for a moment, I said let’s try.” She also spoke about how she got some “coaching” from Sara Erra, who was watching her match from the stands. So, overall, the atmosphere inside the stadium was all in favor of Paolini!
On the other hand, Shnaider was spotted in a couple of arguments with the crowd, making gestures and yelling at them during the match. Did these moments also add to her lapse in concentration? Perhaps yes! According to Paolini’s next opponent, i.e., Peyton Stearns, she has already started to prepare herself for the hostile environment. Stearns has been in a ‘Giant Killing’ mode in Rome, after taking down Madison Keys and Naomi Osaka in the previous rounds, she recently defeated the two-time champion, Elina Svitolina, in yet another three-set thriller [6-4,4-6,7-6(4)]. After this match, during her on-court interview, she was asked what kind of atmosphere she was expecting in her next match against the home favorite. In reply to that, Peyton Stearns stated, “I don’t expect many people to be cheering for me. But that’s ok, I played college tennis so… I’m used to it.“

Although this is Jasmine Paolini’s first SF appearance in Rome, Stearns’ rise, overcoming all the major hurdles, has been the real talk of the town at the moment. In fact, the American is also in her first WTA 1000 SF of her career, which indeed will guarantee her a new career-high ranking on Monday. The 2022 NCAA champion, Peyton Stearns, is the first player in the Open Era to win three consecutive WTA matches in three-set tiebreakers. Not only that, Stearns is now also the first player to make it to the SF at her Rome main-draw debut since Daria Saville (2015). Can she overcome the hostile atmosphere are beat the 2024 French Open finalist in her next match? Time will tell! But there has been a lot of buzz surrounding a few disruptions due to fans’ behavior at the Italian Open this year.

Can Peyton Stearns’ resilience help her overcome the challenges that she’d be facing in her next match against the home favorite?
Talking about the recent drama surrounding the tension between the players and the crowd, other than Shnaider, even Daniil Medvedev was spotted silencing the crowd with a daring hand gesture during his R16 match against Lorenzo Sonego. Even Australia’s Alex de Minaur was recently compelled to halt play before a serve in his second-round match against Luca Nardi to confront two particularly loud and hostile spectators. Jakub Mensik had to do the same during his third-round match against Fabian Marozsan. So, Peyton Stearns’ response is justified by all these previous examples.
However, the tournament organizers have recently stressed their commitment to protecting players and preserving the integrity of this prestigious event. The tournament director, Paolo Lorenzi, mentioned in a statement, “We simply find it unacceptable for this activity to have any point of contact with professional tennis matches. FITP (the Italian tennis federation) will ensure that the persons identified as being responsible for disruptive activities never set foot in a facility hosting a Federal event again.“

Can Peyton Stearns overcome all these and seal a victory against Jasmine Paolini in their first-ever encounter? Well, after defeating Madison Keys, Stearns spoke about how she had to “dig deep” to get the victory in that match. Even against Naomi Osaka, she overcame her health struggles to win that 2-hour 41-minute battle. “I’m the kind of player that I won’t quit, you know..You’re going to have to wheel me off the court in order for me to quit,” she said after that match.
