After being away from the tour for 8 months, Bianca Andreescu finally made a comeback at the 2022 Stuttgart Open. Falling out in the second round, she is now playing the Madrid Open. Even though she is back on the court, her work during her off-court time remains a topic of interest. Having taken a break from tennis after the 2021 Indian Wells, Bianca volunteered at a women’s domestic violence shelter.

During her time at the shelter, Bianca interacted with several victims of domestic violence. As told by Bianca, these ladies shared their stories with her; Stories that left Bianca crying. Adding on to that, recently during her first-round press conference at the Madrid Open, Bianca opened up on how the sports world can help on this specific issue.

Bianca Andreescu on how sports can help in cases of domestic violence

Sports is one of the most followed lines of interest around the world. Given its popularity, it can spread a message amongst vast audiences in the shortest span of time. Addressing its widespread reach, Bianca said, “I think the first step is just bringing awareness to it, if more women can, you know, share their story.”

During her time at the shelter, Bianca helped the ladies with things like food and cooking utensils. Elaborating further, she asserted that even small steps like these can go a long way in the upliftment of the ladies.

“For me, little things like with what I’m doing with the shelter that I was volunteering at, just donating things like food or pans so that they can cook, because they have their own shelter there, their own rooms, I remember they were telling me they were running out of a lot of this stuff, especially during the pandemic. So just little stuff like that can go a long way,” she added.

The importance of speaking about the issue

Emphasizing the importance of coming out and speaking about abuse, Bianca spoke about former doubles World No. 1, Pam Shriver, who once opened up about her experience with the same.

She said, “Even in a sports environment, I’m sure — I mean, I don’t know, but maybe there is like instances here and there with like coaches or trainers, I have no idea, because I have never been through anything like that, and I don’t know anyone who has personally, but if women can just like step out of their — actually, Pam, sorry, I can’t believe I forgot about that. She spoke about that. I’m sure just by that example, many women might feel more comfortable speaking out about it, and, you know, get the justice they deserve.”

On the business end of things, after being out of the tour for 8 months, Andreescu finally opted to start her 2022 season on the red surface. After suffering a second-round loss in Stuttgart, Andreescu is now playing the Madrid Open.

She won her first-round clash against Alison Riske. Beating the 6th seed Danielle Collins in the second round, Andreescu is now in the third round. In the third round, she will face the 22nd seed Jessica Pegula.
