The French Open witnessed several significant moments today. It all began with Serena Williams withdrawing from the tournament and has now come till Coco Gauff making an unfortunate exit in the second round. The American had a promising start but suffered a loss in three sets against Martina Trevisan of Italy.

Coco Gauff’s main draw debut at Roland Garros began in tremendous fashion. She beat Britain’s #1 seed Johanna Konta in straight sets. Konta was wary of Gauff’s talents before the game, and the teenage sensation just proved why she’s a dangerous force in the circuit.

Upon qualifying to the second round for the first time in her career, Gauff came up against Trevisan who’s yet to break into the Top 150 in the WTA rankings. Several predictions handed Gauff the win in this tie, but the Italian stepped up on a night when she was forced to be the underdog against the 16-year-old.

Coco Gauff started the game brightly and raced to win the first set 6-4. This is the first meeting between the pair and Gauff got off to a dominant start. However, the American failed to hold on to her momentum in the subsequent set as her opponent rallied to a quick lead.
Trevisan, who had to battle her way through the qualifiers, showed tremendous grit against her opponent. She displayed a healthy first-serve percentage and broke Gauff’s serve nine times. On the other hand, Coco Gauff failed to deliver a strong serving game and ended up losing points to double faults.
Gauff made a total of 19 double faults in the game, which largely contributed to her second-round loss. Moreover, a 56% first-serve success caused a rift in her rhythm here and there between the games.
As the game went tense in the third and deciding set, the chair umpire added more drama to the fixture. The umpire allegedly made a wrong call in favor of Coco Gauff to which Trevisan didn’t retaliate at all. Instead, she kept her calm, forced Gauff to make mistakes, and fluently won the game.
It really shouldn't be hard for umpires or players to call on a linesperson if there is a dispute about which mark was correct.

And just like that, fan-favorite Coco Gauff exited the French Open 2020 in the second round. This is the first time Martina Trevisan has defeated a WTA player who ranks above the 60s mark. It is indeed an incredible achievement for the Italian to put under her bag and march on at Roland Garros!
