Naomi Osaka has been in the limelight because of her comments over WTA’s decision against Wimbledon. Osaka, who was sure of competing at the upcoming Wimbledon, has now left her participation in doubt. Learning about the WTA’s decision, the 4-time Grand Slam champion called the decision ‘pointless’. While many have come out in support of Osaka’s decision, a number of people have also come out criticizing it. One of them is the legendary player, Martina Navratilova.

In April, Wimbledon announced that it is banning Russian and Belarusian players from competing at this year’s Championships. Criticizing Wimbledon for its decision, WTA announced that it is stripping off the ranking points from the tournament. While some appreciated WTA, others criticized it for its decision.

Expressing her take on WTA’s decision, Osaka said, “I’m the type of player that gets motivated by seeing my ranking go up and stuff like that.” Talking further about WTA’s decision, Osaka admitted that the intention was good. However, she went on to criticize the execution process of the decision.

Learning about Osaka’s take, Martina Navratilova took no time in coming up criticizing the Japanese star. Featuring in British journalist Piers Morgan’s show, Navratilova called out Osaka for her decision. The 65-year-old started by taking a sarcastic dig at Osaka. She said, “It’s kind of nice if you can walk away from a potential two million pounds of payday. Most people don’t have that luxury.”

Navratilova had been one of the most prominent players at Wimbledon in her era. Being a 9-time singles champion and 7-time doubles champion, Navratilova is a major part of Wimbledon’s history. Recalling that phase, Navratilova said, “I play for trophies, not points.”

As mentioned earlier, Navratilova is a major contributor to Wimbledon’s legacy. Going further she expressed her wish to school Osaka for her decision. “I just don’t understand her mentality. I would like to sit down with her and tell her about the history of Wimbledon,” Navratilova said.

Recently, Osaka suffered a first-round blow at the 2022 French Open. With new developments taking place every now and then, it would be interesting to see whether Naomi Osaka participates in Wimbledon or not. She is now expected to kick off her grasscourt campaign.
