Navigating Ethical Crossroads with Chris Evert

In a candid exchange of views, Chris Evert, one of tennis’s most revered figures, raised her eyebrows when confronted with the idea of the WTA Finals setting foot in Saudi Arabia. Evert remarked, “I mean, for me, I would prefer not to go to Saudi Arabia to play the WTA Finals. Not that I’m going to go play, but for me, I would prefer the WTA not go to Saudi Arabia. Obviously, they have the human rights issues and everything, just the way they treat women. I would be against it. But I don’t have a vote,” as reported by the New York Post. The concerns she echoed are deeply rooted in Saudi Arabia’s well-documented human rights concerns, particularly its treatment of women.

Debating Saudi involvement in Tennis

Evert’s viewpoint isn’t a lone stance in this debate. The idea of working together with Saudi Arabia in sports has made people talk a lot and have strong opinions. Evert dismissed the idea, calling it “sports washing.” John McEnroe, Evert’s compatriot and fellow tennis legend, brought his characteristic candor to the conversation. McEnroe labeled the idea as “comical” and brought in the ethical concerns in the discussion.
