Jelena Ostapenko wanted it, and she got it! With the help of rain, the Birmingham Classic first-round clash between the 27-year-old tennis player, and Elisabetta Cocciaretto was suspended. But before that, it was the high-intensity drama between the Latvian tennis player and the chair umpire that grabbed all the attention, as things got a little heated.

In a stunning change of events at the Birmingham tournament, Ostapenko declared her intention to end the match after trailing Elisabetta Cocciaretto by a set and a break. The reigning champion’s plea was denied by umpire Alison Hughes at first, but she eventually gave up and the play was stopped, bringing the situation to a climax.

José Morgado tweeted this tense moment, highlighting the intensity and unpredictability of professional tennis, when even elite players like Ostapenko can experience vulnerable and uncertain moments. However, it was not the argument that stopped the match; the rain apparently sided with the 27-year-old and halted the match.

Although this was their first time playing against each other, the issue was not the opponent for Ostapenko. While the match has resumed once again, the issue is not clear. Moreover, even the umpire’s call turned over when the rain came in between their play, even after she disagreed with the Latvian tennis player’s decisions on the court.

The 13th-ranked player has, however, stirred up controversy with her remarks or deeds before. She caused another commotion almost a month prior when she criticized Ons Jabeur’s coach and spouse, Fernando Verdasco, for being overly enthusiastic during games.

When Ostapenko got tangled in a different on-court controversy

Jelena Ostapenko’s title run ended nearly a month ago in Madrid, thanks to Ons Jabeur. The Wimbledon finalist looked strong from the outset of the match. Everyone in Jabeur’s box was thrilled to watch her defeat her opponent in style, but they became too excited and started yelling loud enough to annoy Ostapenko.

Because of the boisterous applause from her opponent’s coach and spouse, the Latvian was able to maintain her composure for a time before deciding to address the matter. Ostapenko became enraged and turned to face Jabeur’s box, telling them that this was a contest between two players. Numerous witnesses to the event, including journalists, agreed that Jabeur’s box may have been too noisy to be distracting.
