In a high-profile quarterfinal game, two top-seeded players, Jessica Pegula and Victoria Azarenka, will square off against each other for the sixth time on the tour, with the latter having a 3-2 lead in H2H. Victoria Azarenka, who is the 12th seed, outclassed the Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto in her opening-round match in this WTA 500 event. The 2-time singles Grand Slam champion later pulled off a brilliant comeback after dropping the first set against Taylor Townsend, as she prevailed in a three-set thriller, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.
Pegula has a solid 119/74 record on the clay, and she is the number one seed at her home tournament in Charleston. As she will be playing in front of the local crowd, the American player is the favorite to win not just this quarterfinal match but also the championship.
Quarterfinal 3: Danielle Collins vs. Elise Mertens
The newly crowned Miami Open champion is back on the court at her home clay tournament, where she will now face the 11th seed, Elise Mertens, in the quarterfinals. With their H2H record currently locked at 3-3, Collins and Mertens will now mark their seventh meeting on the tour. The American player, who is an unseeded participant, overcame some of the big guns, including Ons Jabeur, Paula Badosa, and Sloane Stephens, to reach the quarterfinal.
Elise Mertens, on the other hand, started her campaign by outshining Varvara Gracheva in a three-set game, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. In the round of 16, the Belgian tennis star then defeated the 7th-seeded Ukrainian, Elina Svitolina, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
While dropping a single set in this entire tournament, Collins has brushed aside some of the big names on the women’s tour. The local favorite, who has a 52-28 record on clay surfaces, will most likely win this match in three sets.
