Wimbledon has been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons. Earlier last month, the tournament announced a decision to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from playing in this year’s championships. The move received widespread criticism from across the tennis fraternity. Moreover, many felt that the decision to ban players based on their nationalities was unfair.
This decision has affected many top players in the world, like Daniil Medvedev and Aryna Sabalenka. Following this ruling, the ATP announced a decision to strip Wimbledon of ranking points for this year’s tournament. Subsequently, the WTA followed suit and announced a similar decision.

WTA not to award ranking points for this season’s Wimbledon Championships
In a statement released by the Women’s Tennis Association, a decision was taken to strip Wimbledon of ranking points this year. The statement read, “As a result of the AELTC’s position that it will not honor its obligation to use the WTA Rankings for entry into Wimbledon and proceed with a partial field not based on merit, the WTA has made the difficult decision to not award WTA ranking points for this year’s Wimbledon Championships.”
Further, the principal organizing body of women’s professional tennis said, “In addition, each of the WTA-sanctioned events (Nottingham, Birmingham, and Eastbourne) will be penalized and their WTA tournament sanctions will be placed on probation. Since alternative and comparable playing and ranking point opportunities exist in the same weeks as those events for the affected players, WTA ranking points will remain in place for those events.”
