Jule Niemeier, on the other hand, had to clinch back-to-back qualifying round victories to get to the main draw of the tournament. As an unseeded participant, the German tennis player brushed aside her French opponent, Varvara Gracheva, while also pulling off a bagel set, 6-3, 6-0, in the opening round.

The round-of-16 match between Jessica Pegula and Niemeier at the San Diego Open will also mark their first meeting on the WTA circuit. With no previous encounters between the WTA players, the H2H record between Pegula and Niemeier is currently locked at 0-0.
