The fans of coach-player duo Coco Gauff and Brad Gilbert can finally heave a sigh of relief. This is because Gauff has recently clarified the reason behind the absence of Gilbert in her Porsche Tennis Grand Prix at the Stuttgart Open. Currently, Gauff has qualified for the quarterfinals of the tournament. However, there was no sign of Gilbert beside her. Addressing the reason behind the hiatus, Gauff explained why her coach can utilize some “break.”
Zendaya and Gauff have been making headlines after they acknowledged each other’s achievements through social media. However, when it came to Zendaya’s association with Gilbert, Gauff humorously rejected the notion that Gilbert preferred Zendaya’s company over cheering her on during the tournament. Rather, she disclosed that she chose to have Gilbert back off, especially as she started working with her new coach, Jean-Christophe Faurel (J.C.). “I kind of told him to take a step back, especially with starting with J.C. I wanted him to just be able to work on it on his own and play a tournament by himself.
Gauff will play back-to-back tournaments at the Madrid Open and the French Open this year. And so she wants to have Gilbert present, mostly for the bigger events during the European swing. Till then, she expressed her desire for her coach to take a break. “And also, like, we are going to have two tournaments together. We’re going to spend a lot of time together. If you know Brad, it’s good to take a break sometimes,” Gauff added.

Gilbert has greatly impacted Gauff’s career. Particularly, her victory at the US Open demonstrated Gilbert’s impact and tactical approach to the game. Nevertheless, Gauff is getting used to a new dynamic now that J.C. is a part of her coaching staff. The two had previously collaborated when she was just 14 years old.

However, they were forced to part ways because of visa concerns. And now, after almost six years, their partnership is visible again. And with his training, Gauff has recently defeated Sachia Vickery in her first match of the Stuttgart Open.

Coco Gauff defeated Sachia Vickery 6-3, 4-6, and 7-5 in a fierce match on Wednesday to advance to the Porsche Grand Prix quarterfinals. In the second round against world No. 3, the 134th-ranked Vickery generated 19 breakpoints. But she could only convert seven of them. Despite committing fifteen double faults during the match, Gauff overcame a 4-2 deficit in the decisive set to win in 2 hours and 26 minutes.

Although she does not hold her best record in this tournament, her improvement is visible as compared to her last performance at the Stuttgart Open. She failed to reach the quarterfinals that year after losing to Anastasia Potapova. However, this year, this is not the case. Gauff will now face Marta Kostyuk in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
